Last Friday, the good folk of Ireland cast their votes and decided that same-sex couples should be free to marry. Over a million people voted in favour for same-sex marriages and more than 60% of the country made their voices heard.
I’m neither Irish or gay, but a victory for equality is a victory for all human beings. Unfortunatley, Northern Ireland still does not recognise same-sex marriage and is now the only part of the United Kingdom not to. Still, change is unstoppable and this is certainly a change for the better.
Prime Minister Enda Kenny said prior to the vote that the country could “create history” and that a “yes” vote would “obliterate” prejudice along with irrational fears of difference. Come Saturday, Kenny said the outcome “disclosed who we are — a generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people.”
As Bob Dylan said: “The times they are a-changing.”
Congrats to all the folk in Ireland who will be planning their weddings.
