Bollocks?: Blaming Video Games For Violence

There are certain facts in life that are irrefutable. Life is unfair, politicians are corrupt, and an upcoming Grand Theft Auto game will be subject to controversy.

The gamers among you will be aware that GTA V, the latest installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, is just around the corner. For those of you who have a life, a new Grand Theft Auto game is pretty much the second coming to square eyes like me. As their name suggest, the Grand Theft Auto games are all about being free in an open world whilst driving fast cars, causing chaos, and generally having a good time. The violent acts you can commit in GTA games means that every time a new installment comes around, it will be attacked by countless politicians and journalists who try desperately to make the news in a vain attempt to disguise how stupid they really are. They seem to think that because video games contain violence, they will turn anyone who plays them into murdering psychopaths, unlike books, TV shows, movies and music which, as we all know, contain no violence whatsoever.

If these people blaming video games were doing it out of genuine concern then I would at least have some respect for them. It’s obvious though that 99% of the critics are a bunch of fuckwits looking for an easy target. Take for instance a game called Mass Effect, This was a Role Playing Game full of deep choice and consequence. It was mature not in the sense that it was full of tits and violence but because your average 14 year old would get bored of it pretty fucking quick, Christ knows I did. During the story line you are in control of a ship and you are able to converse with your crew in between missions, If you talk enough with a certain crew member you may be able to pursue a romantic relationship with him/her. After hours of talking and going on quests together your characters might have sex. You are shown a short cutscene of the two characters getting down to it and then it ends. There’s no tits, cock, minge or arse, much to the disappointment of nerds everywhere. I’ll save you the trouble of Googling it…

Pretty tame right? Not exactly Basic Instinct.

Well, neoconservative blogger Kevin McCullough said of the game: “Mass Effect can be customized to sodomise whatever, whomever, however, the game player wishes,” and “with its ‘over the net’ capabilities virtual orgasmic rape is just the push of a button away.”

I played the from start to finish and I can confirm that there is NO raping and NO sodomy (not that there’s anything wrong with bumming). McCullough later apologized for talking bollocks.

A few years later Mass Effect 3 was out under fire when critics started criticizing the game because it allowed you to pursue a homosexual/lesbian relationship depending on your characters gender. This time the developers told critics to go fuck themselves and the ability to show someone of the same gender your Mass Erect was left in.

Games are every bit as much an art form as books, movies, music or TV. Sure, in the 80’s and 90’s they weren’t up to much but since then gaming has hit its renaissance. Sure, there are games that are just chewing gum for the brain, just like there are mindless summer blockbuster films or shitty teenage romance books. There are however gorgeous works of art that are up there with the likes of The Great Gatsby, The Godfather or Dark Side Of The Moon. Go play Journey and tell me it’s not one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. Go play Red Dead Redemption and tell me it didn’t capture the feel of the Wild West as well as any Clint Eastwood film. Go play The Walking Dead and tell me you weren’t crying by the end.

Yeah…there’s nothing “arty” about this.

I’m tired of people blaming video games for violence because it’s an easy target. Take for instance the latest violent act that has caused GTA V to be under fire. An 8 year old child found a gun in his home and shot his 87 year old Grandma in the head. It’s a senseless tragedy. The kid is too young to understand the reality of what he’s done. After looking for motive the police have decided to blame the crime on the fact this kid played Grand Theft Auto 4. They’re blaming a fucking video game…

How about blaming the absentee parents for letting an 8 year old play an 18 rated game?

How about blaming the parents for leaving him in the care of someone who’s probably too old to take care of themselves?

How about blaming whoever left a gun lying around when an 8 year old was about?

How about blaming the politicians who allow it to be legal for anyone to own a fucking gun!?

No, fuck it, lets blame video games, it’s so much easier. I played Tomb Raider as a kid, I guess my parents should count their lucky stars their son didn’t grow a pair of huge tits and go off adventuring.

Before I go I’d like to recommend you watch these two videos about video game violence. This guy makes some great and funny points.

This second video was posted shortly after the Sandy Hook shootings.
