Bollocks?: Songs named after women.

Or more specifically songs named after a woman’s first name.

So the other night I was watching an episode of Family Guy in which Stewie falls in love with another baby called Suzie. At one point Bryan walks in on him composing a song for her on his guitar and after playing what he’s come up with Stewie reveals the songs name to be Suzie. Bryan berates him for being a clich√© and then comically lists over twenty songs named after women without so much as a pause.

This fanned the flames of my ire and revealed to me an irritation I’d had for years. Songs named after girls. What really irks me is that I appear to be the only one annoyed by it because it shows no sign of stopping. Now obviously just because a song gets named after a girl doesn’t make it a bad song. On the contrary some of the greatest songs ever written are named after girls and if you were to look through my itunes library you would find many of the below songs with numerous play counts. However, I just think naming a song after a girl these days is kind of unimaginative and doesn’t really sell the song to the listener. It seems a shame to go to all the effort of creating a beautiful song only to call it something that has already been used many times before. Also, the name will only have meaning to the artist that wrote it and won’t mean a thing to anyone else. Take the song Debora by T-Rex now I’m sure to the members of T-Rex Debora brings distinct memories of a specific person they wrote a song about but to me it means nothing. I don’t even know a Debora in real life so when I hear that song I just think of a fictional, foul mouthed detective who’s taken six seasons to figure out her brother’s a serial killer. You see what I mean? And it can’t just be me. There will be some people who imagine a fat bitch who used to bully them at school called Debora. there will be others who think of their daughter, others who think of their wife and so on and so on.

In the interest of research I compiled a list of over fifty songs named after girls. Some of which are by my favourite musicians (Frusciante if you’re reading this I would give you a foot rub every day just to have the honour of being in the same room as you).

At My Most Beautiful is an example of a great song with a good name. Michael Stipe could have just named it after the girl or guy he was writing about and it would still be a great song but slightly less accessible. Instead he gave it a beautiful name befitting of a beautiful song and in my opion its all the better for it.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to record a self titled album. Oh don’t even get me started on them…
